New rules for grants for the purchase of electric bikes in 2024

Since January 1, 2024, the French Government's Bicycle Plan, already in force and with an investment of 2 billion euros over the period 2023-2027, has undergone some adjustments.

Among the significant changes, purchase incentives now include used bikes sold by professionals.

All other aids, whether muscular or electric bikes (VAE), remain the same.

The bike plan

Officially unveiled in May 2023, the Bicycle Plan aims to focus its efforts on three major areas: the development of cycling infrastructure, the promotion of training related to cycling, and the maintenance, or even strengthening, of purchase subsidies for muscular and electric bikes. For this last component, the focus is on financial support for households and professionals to facilitate the acquisition of these means of transport.

A major development concerns the inclusion of used bikes among the beneficiaries of grants. As of January 1, 2024, second-hand cycles, hitherto excluded from any subsidy, are included in the aid system. This decision, in accordance with the commitments made when the Bicycle Plan was launched, extends until the end of the plan in 2027. However, it is important to note that only used bikes sold by professionals are eligible. Transactions between individuals are not covered, and each beneficiary can only claim one bonus.

Rewards for the purchase of electric cargo bikes

For the moment, the specific amount of aid relating to used cargo bikes is not specified by the French government. It remains to be determined whether they are subject to the same rules and amounts as the other triporters that are already eligible.

All premiums represent 40% of the acquisition cost and the amount of assistance varies according to the type of engine and the price of the scooter, but can reach up to €1,000 for professionals.
